Brian Chambers

Medium: Photography

INSPIRATION AND PROCESS: Brian’s primary photographic goal is to capture and share the beauty and restorative power of the natural world. He knows success in landscape photography requires one to spend time in nature; watching sunrises, staring at the rising moon, sitting beneath a star filled sky, hiking into the wilderness to capture that unique light, and experiencing the conditions that make a scene come alive.

Balancing the artistic components of photography with the technical challenges of capturing an image is a constant and fascinating adventure. Getting it all to come together to make an image that moves people and preserves that unique moment is the prize.

Brian uses a Nikon digital camera and processes his images primarily in Lightroom to achieve his artistic vision. However, his images are genuine and he never adds things to the shot that were not there nor does he use techniques like replacing a sky with one taken from a different day or location. Brian prefers to put in the hard work of waiting for the right time to capture a shot — he often returns to a location many times until the effort is rewarded.

CREATIVE BEGINNINGS: First drawn to photography in high school, Brian built his own darkroom in the basement and had dreams of being the next Ansel Adams.

ARTISTIC PATH: Brian worked for many years as a veterinarian in Hood River but always inspired by the natural beauty and diversity of the Gorge, he fell in love again with photography and has embraced the digital workflow. His photography has grown from an interest — to an obsession — to an award-winning career.

LIFE AS A GORGE ARTIST: For Brian, the Gorge is a perfect location to be a photographer. Very few places show such a huge variety of subjects and weather. Temperate rainforests, high alpine peaks, waterfalls, rivers, barns, orchards, mountain lakes, and vast fields of wildflowers all collide in an endless choice of subjects to photograph.
