Sue Sutherland
Medium: Painting and Prints
INSPIRATION AND PROCESS. Sue’s work consists of impressionistic landscape paintings and semi-abstract monotype prints. Using expressive brushwork along with fearless color, Sue creates paintings that suggest a mood while capturing the elusive qualities of light. Her hand-pulled prints are created on a press made in Portland by a retired machinist.
Landscape is almost always the subject of her work. Her impressionistic paintings and semi-abstract monotypes are vehicles to express ideas, moods, feelings, and emotions. Through color and brushstroke, she captures the fleeting effects of light and communicates a strong sense of place and connection.
CREATIVE BEGINNINGS. Sue grew up in a small beach town a train ride away from New York City. Her early years were spent exploring the outdoors but in school she always had an affinity for art class. She was introduced to printmaking in high school and continued to make prints in college. She discovered museums and galleries while in high school and spent time riding in to the City on the train and navigating the streets of New York.
ARTISTIC PATH. Sue holds a Bachelor of Science in landscape architecture. After a full-time career in landscape architecture, she started making art again as part of the Alpinee Printmaking Studio in Hood River and has been showing locally and regionally ever since.
LIFE AS A GORGE ARTIST. Sue first visited the Gorge in the summer of 1988. Energized by the natural beauty and recreational opportunities, she relocated the next summer and has been here ever since. Her paintings reflect her profound connection with both the environment and the community of the Gorge. She feels fortunate to live and work within a vibrant community of artists in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.
