DAVE GUTSCHMIDT
CREATIVE BEGINNINGS. Dave Gutschmidt has been working with wood throughout his entire life, finding the medium to be an ideal fit for his artistic sensibilities. He has always been captivated by the beauty of the natural world, reflected in the wood itself.
ARTISTIC PATH. With over 25 years of experience working with the lathe, Gutschmidt is primarily self-taught, gaining inspiration and instruction from books and people he has encountered along the way.
INSPIRATION AND PROCESS. Gutschmidt believes that the wood from a tree serves as a testament to all the conditions it has faced during its lifetime. From storm damage and insect attacks to periods of drought, these challenges manifest themselves in the unique character of the wood. In Gutschmidt’s eyes, the wood’s imperfections are what make it perfect. He endeavors to showcase that inherent beauty in each piece he creates.
Gutschmidt usually starts with an idea for a finished piece but leaves himself free to change direction as the wood dictates during its manipulation.
“Woodturning is a contemplative pursuit for me and it provides a creative outlet,” he explains. “I am fascinated by getting a unique piece of wood and trying to bring out its intrinsic beauty through the exploration of form and design.” Gutschmidt’s passion for discovering the hidden potential in each piece of wood drives his artistic process, as he skillfully transforms raw materials into stunning works of art. Through the creative process, Gutschmidt hopes to impart an element of himself in each finished piece. He works mainly with salvaged wood from the Pacific Northwest.
Dave Gutschmidt is a member of the Pacific Northwest Woodturning Guild, Cascade Woodturners, and SW Washington Woodturners.
