ANGELITA SURMON

ARTISTIC PATH. Angelita produces works in paint and kiln-formed glass. From Angelita: “I like to dance on the line between representation and abstraction, and the natural world is my best teacher. Walking in the landscape, observing seasonal changes expands my relationship with a place, as well as my vocabulary of color, line, light and form. I enjoy close scrutiny of nature’s random calligraphy in the tangled nests of branches and thickets; the inner workings and structure of the landscape.

Along with the natural world, my influences range from medieval tapestries to Northwest visionary artist Mark Tobey, and many others in between. I feel most at home when encircled by tangled undergrowth, and the flickering light of tall trees. The landscape informs my work, and I interpret it in an abstracted way, working to create a meditative image that invites the viewer to enter and wander. The glass works combine sheet glass, rods of glass, called stringer, and powdered and crushed glass called frit. The glass works go through a process of multiple firings and layering of glass materials to create a feeling of depth.”
